2023 Beeginners Bee Course
April 15th and 16th
An old beekeeper in the Kamloops area who mentored many beekeepers in his time used to say. 'Want to keep bees? Take a course, and join a club' Well here is the first step!
Returning to face-to face in person learning! After 2 years of Covid!
We have seen hundreds of people go through our Beeginners course over many years now. I enjoy doing it and it has morphed and been tweaked as the years go by. At first we taught it through the college, then on our farm, then in town, then on-line..... So our plan is a 2 day course. Saturday we will meet in Salmon Arm at a community space. We will hand out manuals and go through equipment, getting started, seasonal management, as well as pests and diseases. Sunday we will meet at our Farm in Tappen. We will go over wintering, honey extraction while at our honey extractor. After lunch we will go to some beehives on the property and everyone will have a chance to handle a frame and see a queen bee in action.
About half of the people who take the course want to keep bees and are chomping at the bit. Among the other half, some people are considering beekeeping and there are some who just want to learn something new. All are welcome.
I do keep nucs available for people who take this course. During the course we will take names and numbers. The nucs will become available the 3rd and 4th week of May. Sometimes people taking the course are unsure if they want to get started immediately, or not. Don't worry about making that decision now. We will make sure you have access to what you need to make an informed decision.
