2022 Beeginners Bee Course
April 23rd and 24th
An old beekeeper in the Kamloops area who mentored many beekeepers in his time used to say. 'Want to keep bees? Take a course, and join a club' Well here is the first step!
The Beeginners Bee Course will be offered this spring combining on-line learning and a chance to visit an apiary! It will be pretty much a full weekend; Saturday will be offered through Zoom going over equipment, placement, bee biology, basic management. As well as swarming, diseases, and pests. Topics will also consist of summer management, honey removal and wintering hives. On Sunday we are going to have a Field Day at our farm. People will be given a time and will have a chance be up close and personal with some beehives right on our property. This will be a perfect time to ask questions, touch some real bee equipment, and make sure you feel prepared. I have taught this course and aided others in teaching it for well over a decade. In Fact we have taught hundreds of people from all over, in and outside of this province. It will be a lot of information, but all who take it will receive a comprehensive manual before the onset of the course. This can be used as a reference for many years into the students adventure. I always implore people to connect with other beekeepers and local clubs.
This will be our second year doing much of the teaching on-line. The first season we did this I was hesitant. But I believe it was a real success and we did have positive feedback. I will again be hiring a moderator that has many hours of experience of running live interactive meetings. They will be designated teaching blocks, designated Q&A times. I want this to be presented in a professional and organized manner. We are capping the amount of people that can join so to make sure everyone has a voice. I've seen sub-par workshops attempted on-line. We can do better! We plan on providing good value for money.
About half of the people who take the course want to keep bees and are chomping at the bit. Among the other half, some people are considering beekeeping and there are some who just want to learn something new. All are welcome.
I do keep nucs available for people who take this course. During the course we will take names and numbers. The nucs will become available the 3rd and 4th week of May. Sometimes people taking the course are unsure if they want to get started immediately, or not. Don't worry about making that decision now. We will make sure you have access to what you need to make an informed decision.
